Working through conflict in urban transformation

Urban transformations abound with conflicts. How to navigate these conflicts? And what role the legal infrastructures and other institutional mechanisms play in dealing with conflicts productively? Join the discussion! We will also explore new ways of working with theatre in urban transformations.

The Drama Lab is a new innovation of Urban Living Labs that uses theatre-based methods to engage with conflict productively. The Drama Labs use a mix of performative and applied drama to enable transdisciplinary engagement between researchers and theatre makers, as well as governmental, market and civil society actors.

Drama Labs in four European cities

In the research project, CONTRA, funded by JPI-Urban Europe, researchers cooperate with the cities of Gdynia (Poland), Drammen (Norway), Genk (Belgium) and Tilburg (the Netherlands), as well as the IDEA Instityt (Poland). In these cities, local Drama Lab pilots have been developed in cooperation with local theatre partners: Nieuwstedelijk Theatre Company (Belgium) and Gdynia Glowna Theatre (Poland), as well as theatre practitioners such as Marthe Sofie L. Eide (Norway) and Taco van Dijk (the Netherlands). At this seminar, the pilots will be presented and discussed as democratic innovations in urban transformation.
